FAQs about Summer Reading Program:

Do I have to come to the weekly performances to participate?
No, while children attending performances counts as a reading activity for prizes it is not required.

My family is in camps and goes out of town a lot in the summer, we can't make it to the library every week.  Can we still sign up?

YES! Children do not have to come in every week.  We encourage families to come in as often as they can and when they can.  However, we will not give out past prizes for weeks missed.  Any week of reading is better than no reading at all.  Studies show children who participate in their library's summer reading program perform better in the next school year and retain more information over the summer compared to their peers who did not participate.

My child has required reading and/or has to read certain AR/Lexile level already this summer.

The Summer Reading Program is very flexible.  The reading activities range from reading a book on your level to reading for 20 minutes.  Your child can do their school's program and the library's at the same time.  The program is designed to be flexible with your family's and teacher's goals for your child over the summer.

I have a newborn and three year old, they can't read yet.  Can they sign up?

Absolutely! We have pre reader reading log and activities to do with your child.  We also have special baby toys as prizes for our little baby patrons.  Getting your child ready to read from the time they are born to pre K is extremely important.  Children have a very difficult time in primary school if they lack pre reading skills.  Reading to your child is extremely important.  Summer Reading Program for pre readers covers several basic literacy exercises to do with your children.

Who are the Free Performances for?
During the summer reading program, our free performances are suited for elementary aged children.  We do welcome all ages IF there is space in the meeting room.  If meeting room space begins to get crowded adults/parents whose children are old enough to sit by themselves may be asked to leave to make room for all children.  In the event of a crowded performance we will open the meeting room by zones.  1st.  Gold Zone: those wearing the official 2013 SRP shirt.  2nd Green Zone children who are old enough to sit by themselves (K-5) 3rd Silver Zone: Children who need a parent to sit with them and their parent.  If there is room adults who would like to see the performance may enter.  Luckily we usually get all ages of children in.  We do ask patrons arrive 15-30 minutes early to ensure all children are seated in time.  We cannot gaurentee there will be space after the performance has started.  Failure to follow staff instructions during performances will result in asking you and your party to leave the library.

Do you have stortimes and programs for babies and preschoolers during the summer?
Yes! Please check our schedule of events, craft week, and Summer Storytime schedule.

Will you have the official Summer Reading Shirts available for sale again this year?

Yes, the Friends of the Hall County Library will be selling the shirts in toddler through youth large sizes at all library branches. Sales from the shirts will go to pay for Summer Reading Program 2014.  Children who wear their 2013 Summer Reading Program shirt can come early to performances and sit in the front.  If you wear a shirt to a performance please arrive early since these children are let first in line.

Is there a program for teens?

Yes, we have a Summer Reading Program for rising 6th graders through rising 12th graders.  The theme this year is "Beneath the Surface".  Please visit our teen page on our website for a schedule of programs.  Teens can sign up as well from May 29th-July 27th.  Teens have their own prizes and drawings for large prizes.
